As a Christian Writer, is it Okay to Write about Magic in Stories?

Hey readers! Today I'm going to cover a topic that has been weighing on me heavily for some time now: as a Christian writer, is it okay to write about magic in stories?

To start us off, I would like to point out how common magic is in books--and movies--these days. Note that I'm talking about the fantasy genre. Almost every fantasy book I've read seems to have a touch of magic in it. In fact, my novel, Where the Tunnel Ends, has the slightest touch of it. But is that bad?

In my opinion, no.

For some examples:

*In Kara Swanson's Dust, Claire is able to make pixie dust to fly.

*In Tolkien's the Lord of the Rings, Gandalf is a wizard, though a kind, wise one.

*In the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy returns home by tapping her red shoes together.

*In Shannon Hale's the Goose Girl, Ani can understand goose and wind speech.

*In Disney's Encanto, Antonio is able to speak with animals (which does sound kind of awesome, lol).

So, in my opinion, none of that is bad, based on the fact that it is good magic.

However, I would like to mention what magic is, though I'm sure you all know. It's a thing that pushes away God, and God clearly condemns it in the bible. Knowing that, it doesn't make me want to write it. But as fiction writers--and this is to all the fantasy writers out there--it's so easy to include a magic system in your worlds. In fact, in some cases, it's vital. I know that, because I've done the same thing. However, I find magic acceptable in the fantasy genre, if it's not pushing away God. Maybe it's how your world functions. Maybe it's a unique element in the story. Pixie dust; a stream that can heal. Something simple, that doesn't push away God.

So yes, I find writing like that acceptable. But writing about dark magic? No. Its evil, it's an abomination to the Lord. But if we do include magic in our stories, it shouldn't be the dark kind. We need to honor the Lord with our writing and can do that one small step at a time.

Welp, that concludes today's post. Sorry it's so short, but it's something I felt the need to write about. <3

Before I go, I have some quick announcements! The first is I updated the blog a bit, so now anyone can comment without having to "sign in" to Wix 😁. And the second is that there's a cover reveal, book release, and guest posts coming soon! So keep your eyes peeled 👀

Until next time,

Hmmm, wow, I've never really thought about it that way. There is really dark magic and good magic. Thank you for sharing!
