Autumn is my favorite season. I don't know what it is, but the chill in the air, the cozy sweaters, and the pumpkin spice are a few reasons why I love autumn. And let's not mention writing! Long days with a pen and paper, scribbling ideas down in the chilly fall air. Gotta love it.


I've put together a list of 20 autumn-themed writing prompts which you can find below. Feel free to use the ideas, edit the prompts for ideas more fitting to your WIP, or whatever you wish! These prompts are free for the taking. :)

  1. You are in a room and you can't see. One day, your sight returns. Scribbled all over the walls are the words: Don't tell them you can see.

  1. A writer has just experienced a terrible loss and is determined to find beauty in the fall season. Tell the story through the writer's journal entries.

  1. Your character picks up a fallen leaf and can't believe what they discover beneath it...


  1. Your group of characters go on a fall camping trip. What happens?


  1. One crisp fall day, your character finds an old, dusty book hidden in the attic. Little do they know, it holds the key to a lost world of secrets and danger.

  2. Your character finds an old library card tucked inside a used book. When they try to visit the library listed on the card, they discover it doesn't existat least, not in this world.

  1. Your character is following a strange, handwritten recipe found in the back of a thrifted cookbook. But when they reach the final step, it calls for an ingredient that shouldn't exist.
